Becoming a Desk Assistant

Students often find that working as a desk assistant in the FMU Writing Center can be an enriching educational experience. Being a desk assistant helps you develop marketable interpersonal communication skills, time management skills, clerical skills, and computer skills. Duties include greeting students and visitors, scheduling tutoring appointments, answering phone calls, performing data entry tasks, maintaining filing systems, and completing other clerical tasks as assigned.

If you are interested in learning more about being a desk assistant or filling out an application, please contact Dr. Lindsey Banister, Writing Center Director, through email or by phone at 661-1528. Applications can be picked up in the Writing Center, located in FH 114-C.  Successful applicants must be work study-eligible and have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.75 or higher.  Hiring periods generally occur near the end of the fall semester and near the end of the spring semester.

 

Becoming a Tutor

Students often find that working as a tutor in the FMU Writing Center can be an enriching educational experience. Tutoring can help you to develop your interpersonal communication skills, build experience in counseling and instruction, and even help you to improve your own writing abilities. In today’s marketplace, college graduates with excellent oral and written communication skills are in high demand. Working as a tutor in the FMU Writing Center can help you to demonstrate your abilities to prospective employers. Our recent tutors have been accepted to prestigious graduate programs and have successfully located employment in teaching and publishing.

If you are interested in learning more about tutoring or filling out an application, please contact Dr. Lindsey Banister, Writing Center Director, through email or by phone at 661-1528. Applications can be picked up outside the Writing Center, located in FH 114-C.  Successful applicants must have completed at least one semester at FMU, have successfully completed the English composition sequence (English 101 and 102 or their transferred equivalents), and have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher.  Hiring periods generally occur near the end of the fall semester and near the end of the spring semester.
