ELIGIBILITY: All Francis Marion University students are eligible to apply.
CONFERENCE DATES: The NMUN conference will take place in New York City in April. All student delegates must be able to travel one day before and one day after in case airline travel dictates we arrive early or stay late. Most travel expenses will be covered by Francis Marion University, including airfare, transportation to and from the airport, and hotel. The student will be responsible for any additional costs while in New York.
APPLICATION REVIEW PROCESS: A committee of several Francis Marion faculty members will carefully review each application. The committee will select the top applicants for interviews. Please keep in mind that this process is highly competitive. Successful students will be notified in time for spring semester registration.
PARAMETERS OF PARTICIPATION: Each student who is chosen to participate will be enrolled in HNRS 350 (3 credit hours), and must be available for weekly (sometimes more) meetings during the spring semester in the lead up to the conference.
The purpose of class meetings is so students can:
- learn about the United Nations
- learn about FMU’s assigned country
- practice caucusing and debate
In addition, each student will be assigned a committee for which they will prepare position papers to discuss and debate while at conference. This process includes quite a bit of research and writing. Therefore, students will need to be prepared for both written and oral communications as part of this experience.
Students must also be prepared to work in a business-like setting for a full week. This includes being appropriately attired. They must also have the ability to work with others from different cultures and to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects positively upon FMU.
