International Perspectives Welcomes David Merkel and Claire Sechler Merkel
FMU’s International Programs hosted David Merkel Claire Sechler Merkel from Summit International Advisors on Thursday, February 20. During their visit to FMU, the Merkel’s visited Dr. David White’s Careers in Political Science class and Dr. Tobias Lemke’s and Dr. Kyle Morgan’s Honors Model UN class before their keynote talk that afternoon.
Claire shared moments about past work in Eastern Europe, time spent with the International Republican Institute, and experiences working on different Presidential Campaigns. David spoke briefly of time spent in United Nations General Assembly meetings and work while living in Washington, D.C. before together founding Summit International Advisors.


Having worked in campaigns and with nonprofits across not only the United States, but also parts of Europe, Asia, and more, Claire and David Merkel provided vital information for students interested in international studies, programs, and work. David shared that international work is attainable, and encouraged students and faculty alike to work in fields that one interested in. He shared that by doing work you are passionate about, you will always be doing your best. Claire added that being prepared and ready to take the opportunities provided will ensure you find yourself in the positions you’ve set your mind to.
In their closing notes, Claire and David shared the importance of networking and nurturing the relationships that you create, as they may open up opportunities and connections. They also stressed the importance of always doing your best work on the task at hand, and being honest, dependent, reliable, and resilient. When it came to travel, the Merkel’s noted that the importance of respecting different countries’ cultures and making an effort to know or at least try speaking the language. Most importantly, Claire and David noted that by focusing on making something out of what you have, you will allow yourself many more opportunities than you could have expected.
