International Perspectives Speaker Series – Spring 2023
International Programs hosted two professionals, one from a non-profit organization and another from the public sector, as part of the International Perspective series that debuted this spring and which was fully funded by the Professional Experience and Knowledge (PEAK) program.
Their first speaker, Ms. Michele Ruehs Steinbuch, Vice President of the American Council on Germany, visited several classes on campus including Comparative Politics, PR and News Writing, and a Human Resources Management class during her visit on February 13 and 14, 2023.
Ms. Steinbuch’s capped her visit to FMU with her presentation “Labor of Love: Pursuing Your Passion in the Nonprofit World,” where she encouraged students, faculty, and staff to seek a career in what they are most passionate about. Ms. Steinbuch touched upon the personal bond that linked her to Germany and which led her to work for the American Council on Germany, a non-profit organization that promotes and strengthens the transatlantic relationship. The discussion was followed by a reception where guests could interact with the speaker and ask additional questions.
On March 8, International Programs welcomed its second speaker to campus, Mr. Andy Sisk, U.S. Diplomat in Residence for the Mid-Atlantic region. Students and faculty gathered to hear Mr. Sisk speak about his career with the U.S. Department of State and the path that led him to pursue this career. During his talk, Mr. Sisk gave detailed accounts about the different countries he has been assigned to, as well as experiences working with international political officials on a regular basis.
During his visit, Mr. Sisk also guest lectured in Careers in Political Science and U.S. History classes. Students learned about different internship and career opportunities available through the U.S. Department of State, many of which would give them the opportunity to intern or work full time overseas.
International Programs hopes to bring the International Perspectives series back for Fall 2023.
