Description: Analysis of the properties of many-particle systems at finite temperature using both analytical and numerical methods. Topics include heat, work, temperature, pressure, entropy, the laws of thermodynamics, engines, refrigerators, phases of matter, and phase transitions. These macroscopic phenomena will be described from a microscopic perspective using basic probability concepts, Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics methods, statistical ensembles, classical and quantum distribution functions, the partition function, and free energy.
