Description: This course is designed to introduce students to concepts and strategies that will prepare them to meet the unique needs of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students in the mainstream classroom. Participants in this course will study second language acquisition and development, models of teaching (including sheltering and scaffolding) and assessing ELLs, principles of culturally and linguistically responsive teaching, and strategies for engaging families of CLD students. Emphasis will be on developing a repertoire of practical, evidence-based, pedagogical strategies for teaching CLD students in the mainstream classroom through differentiation of instruction to accommodate the educational needs of CLD students.
