Physics & Engineering

Department of Physics and Engineering

Excellence in education

Our department offers a baccalaureate degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, and Engineering Technology. Study the fundamental natural laws of the physical universe and the methods of scientific inquiry in physics courses. Learn to analyze and evaluate methods of production or innovate systems and processes to improve quality and productivity. Use an understanding of physical mechanics to design a machine.  Take classes in astronomy to understand the solar system, our galactic neighborhood, and wonder at the universe.

As a physics major, you can choose a concentration in Computational Physics or Health Physics. Health physicists are experts in radiation protection. Computational physicists utilize modern computing (including our on-campus super computer) to analyze and solve complex physical problems.

Industrial Engineers apply science, math, and engineering concepts to improve complex systems. Attaining a degree in Industrial Engineering will enable each student to pursue professional employment in a broad range of industries (including manufacturing, supply chain, and healthcare). FMU’s Industrial Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the commission’s General Criteria and Program Criteria for Industrial Engineering.

Mechanical Engineers apply the physics of motion to design equipment, devices, and machines.  Mechanical Engineers work in a variety of design and manufacturing industries, including aerospace, automotive, construction, energy, and robotics. FMU’s Mechanical Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the commission’s General Criteria and Program Criteria for Mechanical Engineering.

Our majors are involved in undergraduate research projects on cutting-edge topics and have internships with multiple industry partners.  Students are well-prepared for careers in industry, scientific research, and graduate school.
