Francis Marion University’s School of Education offers a wide range of academic programs designed for aspiring teachers, experienced educators and organizational leaders at various stages in their careers.

Our programs offer exceptional academic preparation that reflects our guiding principles of Leadership, Learning, Accountability, and Diversity.

The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) accredits Francis Marion University’s School of Education’s M.A.T. – LD program. CAEP promotes excellence in educator preparation through quality assurance and continuous improvement. This accreditation is provided to programs that offer an initial license.

Master of Education Degrees

M.Ed. Teaching and Learning

For individuals who have completed a bachelor’s degree and wish to increase their overall knowledge of education. This program is appropriate for both educators and non-educators. The program is online and can be completed in one year.

M.Ed. Montessori Early Childhood Education and M.Ed. Montessori Elementary Education

For individuals who are already currently licensed teachers who would like to add certification in either Early Childhood Montessori Education, or Elementary Montessori Education. Students take a variety of courses throughout the year and do a summer of Montessori-specific courses.

Master of Arts in Teaching

M.A.T. Multi-Categorical Special Education

  • All classes online
  • 51 hours leading to initial certification
  • Practicum and student teaching can be completed in your school district
  • Focus on preparation to teach students with mild disabilities

M.A.T. Early Childhood

  • Accelerated Master of Arts in Teaching with Major in Early Childhood Education
  • ONLY open to current undergraduate FMU students in the Early Childhood Education Program.
  • This program begins with the Spring semester of senior year at the undergraduate level and is completed at the end of the following year.
  • Students in this program will receive a non-licensed degree in Early Childhood Education at the undergraduate level. Initial license is awarded with completion of the graduation portion of this program.

M.A.T. Elementary

  • Accelerated Master of Arts in Teaching with Major in Elementary Education
  • ONLY open to current undergraduate FMU students in the Elementary Education Program.
  • This program begins with the Spring semester of senior year at the undergraduate level and is completed at the end of the following year.
  • Students in this program will receive a non-licensed degree in Elementary Education at the undergraduate level. Initial license is awarded with completion of the graduation portion of this program.
