The Act requires that institutions shall provide financial aid grants to students (including students exclusively enrolled in distance education), which may be used for any component of a student’s cost of attendance or for emergency costs that arise due to coronavirus, such as tuition, food, housing, health care (including mental health care), or child care. In making financial aid grants to students, an institution of higher education shall prioritize grants to students with exceptional need, such as students who receive Pell Grants. Cares Act- HEERF – Student Aid Reporting
Following the guidance provided by the United States Department of Education, Francis Marion University distributed the CARES Act funding to students with the greatest financial need as demonstrated by their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The initial allocation of funds were distributed in a timely manner and are intended to help these students offset expenses directly related to disruptions to their education due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Future allocations will be made on a case-by-case basis to students who did not receive funds in the initial cycle and demonstrate financial need. The office of Financial Assistance is facilitating this process until the funds are exhausted.
