Chemistry Facilities

Facilities

The Department of Chemistry is located in the Leatherman Science Facility (LSF) and McNair Science Building (MSB), both of which provide excellent lecture and laboratory facilities for undergraduate teaching and research.

The General Chemistry labs are held in three lab rooms in MSB, all of which have adjoining prep, balance, and chemical stock rooms. The Organic Chemistry lab includes hoods at every work station and has three separate instrument rooms, a prep room, and a chemical stock room associated with it. There are additional laboratories for the Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Instrumental Analysis lab courses. In addition, a separate lab houses faculty and student research and includes hoods, a prep room, and a chemical stock room.chemistry student

Lecture courses in the Department of Chemistry rarely exceed 60 students, while all lab sections are no more than 24. Upper level courses are often less than 10 students, so student-faculty interaction is excellent. Laboratory instruments are interfaced with computers for data acquisition and processing. The Department maintains two computer laboratories (MSB 315, which also serves as a student lounge and peer tutoring center, and LSF 310) to assist students with graphing, preparing lab reports, and other tasks. Student computers are also equipped to access the supercomputing cluster in the Department of Physics and Engineering for laboratory assignments and research in computational chemistry.
