Francis Marion University invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Archaeology or Historical Archaeology. Applicants whose sub fields complement the Department’s existing offerings, who have experience teaching, and who have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment are preferred. ABDs with some teaching experience will receive consideration.

This position will include significant opportunities for field research and community engagement in archaeology/ historical archeology. The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced classes in archaeology, historical archaeology, and applied archaeology, as well as required courses that complement our faculty in History, Public History, and Anthropology. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will engage in archaeological field studies. We offer an exciting opportunity for a research archaeologist, with projects focusing on Southeastern United States, as well as the wealth of sites in South Carolina associated with the Revolutionary War career of the University’s namesake, General Francis Marion. Additionally, FMU is a partner with Coastal Carolina University at the Belle Baruch Institute for South Carolina Studies, located on the grounds of Hobcaw Barony in Georgetown, SC., that offers a host of promising research and educational opportunities.

Duties will also include the supervision of undergraduate internships in archaeology. The successful candidate will play an active role in student advising, recruitment activities, faculty governance, and engagement with the community. There are opportunities to teach additional courses during the summer. Internal funding for travel, research, and summer research stipends are available on a competitive basis.
