FMU hosts Sankofa African American Museum on Wheels
Francis Marion University will celebrate Black History Month on February 7 and 8 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. with the Sankofa African American Museum on Wheels Exhibition, curated by Angela W. Jennings. The traveling exhibit portrays African-American’s challenges throughout history as well as the many contributions they’ve given to the nation and the world. The museum will be located inside the Honors Center.
Sankofa is a Ghanaian term that tells us to “use the wisdom of the past to build the future.” For more than 20 years, the museum has educated, enlightened, and empowered young and old alike with living history.
FMU will also be conducting tours of its two historic, Hewn Timber Cabins on those dates from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Dating back to the mid-19th century, the cabins were the living quarters for enslaved persons, and later, sharecroppers. They are a part of the legacy of the land, and part of the region’s historical heritage. The cabins were relocated a short distance from their original locations on the Wallace Gregg farm to their current setting on Wallace Woods Drive after the founding of FMU.
Groups visiting the cabins with 25 or more people should notify the university in advance so that necessary preparations and accommodations can be made. For more information, contact Dr. Todd Couch at todd.couch@fmarion.edu or 843-661-1917.
